About Civics Unplugged

Civics Unplugged (CU) is a non-profit that empowers high school leaders with the training, funding, and community they need to become Civic Innovators. We do this through a fellowship program for youth seeking to become social entrepreneurs, supporting graduates as they launch projects and begin careers, and creating new initiatives that push the boundaries of civic education for youth. Through social entrepreneurship, our Fellows drive positive change in our climate, democracy, digital lives, and more.

Since we launched Civics Unplugged in January of 2020, 2,500 Fellows, ages 14-19, have graduated from the program. Of our Fellows, 70% identify as People of Color, 74% identify as young women, and 40% will be the first in their families to go to college. Our cohorts are global, representing all 50 U.S. States and over 74 countries. The average acceptance rate for each cohort is 11%.

After the program, Alumni enter the Civics Unplugged community, where they can access funding and support for initiatives. To date we’ve invested $250,000 directly to Fellowship graduates and their projects. In just two years since launching the program, C.U. alumni have: been appointed to boards of education in the US, given official TED Talks, earned a weekly column in the Washington Post, won global awards and scholarships, been invited to White House Briefings, and even launched Fellowships of their own. All told, Civics Unplugged alumni – all under the age of 22 – have raised over $300,000 in outside funding, and reached over 4,100,000 people in 30 different countries through programs and content initiatives.
